Boston Marathon 💙💛 is almost here and we will be shaking out along the waterfront and having coffee together on Sunday, 4/14!

To follow up on yesterday’s post about how our @vdot_o2 training efforts should feel, we thought it would be helpful to explain the WHY behind each of them!

If you read Jack Daniels’ book “Daniels’ Running Formula,” this is all explained in there in much greater detail, but this chart summarizes the main points behind the purpose of the different types of training paces for you.

A few other thoughts from our coaches:

💙we do the bulk of our running at EASY pace because this brings about cellular changes and builds heart and muscular strength with the lowest amount of risk for injury.

💛Marathon pace isn’t really an effort that brings about physiological adaptations necessarily, but we spend time here to learn what it feels like at this effort and to build mental strength and tactics that we can apply when we race a marathon.

💗Threshold is where we build our endurance and the body gets good at clearing blood lactate so we can sustain faster running for longer periods of time. Coach Jess calls this “learning to stay” - technically we could hold this for about an hour (comfortably hard) if we were racing

💚Interval is about aerobic power and speed! This is intense but not all-out. We don’t spend more than about 5 minutes at a time at this level of effort. It’s HARD and doing so for too much longer brings greater risk of injury.

❤️Repetition is about building running economy and efficiency, as well as speed. This is quick pick ups, strides, hill sprints - short superfast but nit strained bouts that generate neuromuscular adaptations for greater power output per stride! Usually we don’t do these for more than 2:00 at a time (for most of our athletes it’s more like 20-60 seconds, max).
