easing into the taper

How I’m feeling at this very minute: Lucky.  Blessed.  Grateful.  Excited.  Amazed.

(And a little bit stressed, but that’s okay).

This time tomorrow I will be on an airplane with my husband and three children heading to Jamaica.  And though we’ve been looking forward to this trip for months and months and months, I’m still having a hard time truly believing it is really happening.

We are blessed beyond words.  My “other parents” (or “in-laws” as some people say) are taking all of us to Jamaica for an entire week.  That’s 6 adults and 5 young children in paradise together, making memories, relaxing, playing, laughing, exploring, connecting …

And of course, I will also be running.

But as luck would have it, next week is my first official week of taper so I won’t be running all that much.  I have access to a treadmill and am planning to run about 25 miles while I’m there.  I usually have a hard time easing into the taper – I’m edgy, anxious and out of sorts.  I think Jamaica is going to pretty much change that next week.  I’m thinking the perfect solution to my taper crazies is to spend a week in the Caribbean.  Oh if only every taper could start out this way!

My long run this weekend is 16 miles, with 6-8 of them at race pace.  My incredible friend Dora took the day off of work today so we can run together, which means I won’t have to run 16 miles on the treadmill in Jamaica!  So in a short while I will be taking my buddy Will to school and then dropping Baby Gus off at my sister’s because she is so amazing and is watching him for me while we run.  Yet another few reasons why I feel so blessed and thankful today.

I still have lots of packing to do, more laundry to take care of (seriously – does it EVER end?), a dog to take to the pet hotel and gobs of other things on my list.  But I’m going to relax – I know it will all get done and pretty soon I will be on an island surrounded by loved ones, with my toes in the sand and the sun on my skin.  Taper, here I come!
